In January of 1967, the Kansas City Chiefs and the Green Bay Packers faced off in what would come to be known as the first Super Bowl. With the Chiefs advancing to the Super Bowl for the first time in 50 years with a win earlier today, observers of the sport with a keen sense of history began to wonder: might we see a rematch of that fateful first Super Bowl matchup?

Unfortunately for the Green Bay Packers, the San Francisco 49ers held off their 4th quarter rally to emerge victorious in this NFC Championship Game. The 49ers looked dominant throughout the game, ending the game with a commanding 37-20 victory.

Leading the standout performances in the game was San Francisco running back Raheem Mostert. In the first half, he became the first player in NFL history to score 3 touchdowns and rush for at least 150 yards in one half of a playoff game. Writing for CBS Sports, Jared Dubin described Mostert’s performance as “arguably the best playoff game of all time.”

In the game’s second half, the Packers looked more alive, scoring 7 in the third quarter and 13 in the fourth. Their hopes were crushed late in the game, however: with just under 2 minutes left, Aaron Rodgers threw a long pass that looked like it might connect for a touchdown — but was instead precisely picked off by Richard Sherman, who was immediately surrounded by jubilant teammates. The game didn’t end there, but it might as well have.

It’ll be a San Francisco/Kansas City matchup in this year’s Super Bowl, with both teams delivering exciting victories on their way there. Fans of both teams will be hoping for more of the same come early February.
