Over the course of his career in baseball, Erik Kratz spent time playing for a host of teams in the league, including multiple stints with the Yankees, Phillies and Blue Jays. As one might expect from a journeyman player, Kratz has some stories to tell about his time in Major League Baseball. And, as it turns out, one of them involves a team engaged in the practice of stealing signs.
This isn’t the sign-stealing scandal you’re probably thinking of, though. That one, which focused on the Astros, had significant consequences throughout the league. This one involves the Colorado Rockies, who allegedly made use of a similar system in 2018. At NJ.com, Brendan Kuty reports that Kratz made the comments about the Rockies on the YES Network’s podcast Curtain Call.
“They used to take a Theragun and bang it on their metal bench,” Kratz said during the interview. During the same year, Kratz was part of the Brewers’ squad; the two teams faced one another in the playoffs for that season.
Kratz argued that the Astros’ practice went above and beyond what other teams were doing. “The difference is, the Astros may have taken it a little too far. Maybe a little bit too far,” he said. “Maybe continued to do it. Or maybe it’s just the fact that they won the World Series and everybody’s pissed about that.”
He also suggested that a pair of teams that same season were engaged in similar practices. Will these allegations lead to another scandal that affects the league? This is likely not the last thing we’ll hear about it.
