It sounds like the NFL's all-time passing leader still wants to play

After playing 14 seasons in New Orleans and 19 in the NFL overall, Drew Brees sounds as if he has at least one more left in him.

A free agent in March, Brees indicated to Jane Slater of NFL Media that he expects to reach a deal with the Saints to return to the team once the two sides begin contract negotiations.

Though the NFL’s all-time leading in passing yards and touchdowns didn’t explicitly say he will be returning to New Orleans, he did say the only team he could see himself playing for in 2020 and beyond is the Saints.

“I’ve never been in the situation where I was mulling over the thought of [returning],” Brees said. “To me, each one of these contracts, I don’t know how many it’s been, I’ve played with them 14 years. It’s not a matter of if it gets done, it’s when. At this stage of my career, it’s not a given if I come back every year but when that time comes, I’ll always be a Saint.”

That’s good news for New Orleans as the other two quarterbacks on their roster, veteran Teddy Bridgewater and gadget player Taysom Hill, also have expiring contracts and will hit free agency in March.

It seems likely that Bridgewater, who went 5-0 as a starter for the Saints this season while Brees was out with a thumb injury, will be gone but there’s a good chance Hill will be back with New Orleans as he should be relatively affordable to retain.

Brees indicating he’ll be back in New Orleans in 2020 is also notable because there had been rumblings that an unidentified TV network had been sniffing around the possibility of hiring him as an NFL analyst in the hopes the 41-year-old could become the next Tony Romo.
