Earlier this month, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced their decision to step back from the British royal family. Speculation endured as to what this meant in practical terms: it wasn’t necessarily a case of abdication, but there also wasn’t a huge precedent for an announcement such as this.

A new report from Pat Saperstein at Vanity Fair offers more details about what to expect from the couple — and what their connection to the royal family will be going forward.

Saperstein cites a new statement by Queen Elizabeth and Buckingham Palace, released earlier today, which provides more details and offers a more formal sense of what the couple’s decision to step back means in practice.

“With The Queen’s blessing, the Sussexes will continue to maintain their private patronages and associations,” it states. It also notes that the couple will no longer use their formal titles, and are planning to pay the government back for expenses related to the renovation of their residence:

The Sussexes will not use their HRH titles as they are no longer working members of the Royal Family.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have shared their wish to repay Sovereign Grant expenditure for the refurbishment of Frogmore Cottage, which will remain their UK family home.

The couple have announced that they plan to split their time between the U.K. and the United States. This plan is set to go into effect this spring. Its announcement brings to a close a great deal of speculation about the couple’s future.
