Remote work may be the post-lockdown future for most employees

Twitter employees may never return to the office.

On Tuesday, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey announced that many employees will be permitted to work from home indefinitely, regardless of lockdown status. Dorsey made the announcement in an email first obtained by BuzzFeed News, in which he informed employees that Twitter’s offices were unlikely to open before September, and that all in-person events and most business travel had been canceled for the rest of the year.

“Opening offices will be our decision,” a Twitter spokesperson said. “When and if our employees come back, will be theirs.”

Twitter first encouraged employees to work from home back in March. “We’ve been very thoughtful in how we’ve approached this from the time we were one of the first companies to move to a work-from-home model,” a spokesperson told BuzzFeed News. “We’ll continue to be, and we’ll continue to put the safety of our people and communities first.”

At the beginning of Twitter’s work-from-home plan, the company’s human resources head Jennifer Christie told BuzzFeed News the company’s office culture would “never probably be the same” after employees adjusted to working from home. “People who were reticent to work remotely will find that they really thrive that way,” Christie said. “Managers who didn’t think they could manage teams that were remote will have a different perspective. I do think we won’t go back.”

Back in the day, working from home used to be a luxury many of us silently knew not to take advantage of too often. Now here we are, probably working from home forever, probably never going back, and somehow it’s a lot less fun than it used to be.
