The year since Game of Thrones’ seventh season ended has given fans plenty of time to scrutinize last year’s finale. One of the most fretted-over scenes — spoilers start in the next paragraph — involves a strange closeup of Tyrion Lannister, played by Peter Dinklage has generously. The actor breaks it down for Entertainment Weekly.

The shot that sparked all the speculation is of Tyrion’s face turning to confusion and disappointment when he realizes that Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen, the two leaders he helped bring together, have consummated their relationship. As for why this would bother Tyrion in any significant way, Dinklage gave an in-depth response: “It’s complicated… They’re [Jon and Daenerys] the two people he has the most in common with, in a way – they’re both outsiders in their own families who have refused to follow the path their family has taken,” Dinklage told Entertainment Weekly.

Tyrion thinks “passion and politics don’t mix well,” Dinklage continued. “He knows the two of them getting together could be very dangerous.” The romance is sure to be its own pop culture phenomenon when Game of Thrones returns for its final six episodes next year.
