In 2014, Jimmy Bennett, the actor who is accusing Asia Argento of sexual assaulting when he was only 17, sued his parents for allegedly taking $1.5 million of the money he earned as a child star for their own use.

This lawsuit, filed in 2014, has become part of an argument used by Argento‘s legal team to try and discredit Bennett as greedy and litigious, reports The Daily Beast.

In a statement sent to reporter Yashar Ali, Argento wrote that Bennett was “undergoing severe economic problems” when he requested the settlement from her and had “undertaken legal actions against his own family requesting millions in damages.”

Argento, herself a major figure in the #metoo movement after coming forward with a rape accusation against Harvey Weinstein, has suffered a huge public relations hit from Bennett’s claims. She was just dropped from X Factor Italy

But the lawsuit actually shows an all-too-familiar picture of showbiz parents and a child star who achieved early financial success, only to see his income disappear in adulthood. According to The Daily Beast, Bennett alleged that his parents had “misappropriated” $1.5 million from his earnings, most of which went into funding his parents’ businesses. He says they also used the money to buy their Huntington Beach home, which is worth approximately $1.1 million, according to Zillow.
