The latest Spotify Singles series sees the five nominees in the Best New Artist category at Sunday’s Grammy Awards revisit their original material as well as record covers of other musicians’ work, and kicking things off is everyone’s favorite guitar-smasher, Phoebe Bridgers.

Bridgers teamed up with none other than Jackson Browne, who contributes backing vocals, for a new version of her song “Kyoto.” She and Browne have collaborated in the past; they joined forces for a devastating rendition of McCarthy Trenching’s “Christmas Song” in 2018. (In addition to Bridgers’s Best New Artist nod, “Kyoto” is nominated for Best Rock Song and Best Rock Performance at this year’s Grammys.)

Her second track for the Spotify series is a wistful cover of John Prine’s “Summer’s End,” which features backup vocals by Maria Taylor and opens with a voicemail from Bridgers’s grandfather wishing her a happy birthday. Prine, who passed away from COVID-19 complications last April, was nominated for Best New Artist back in 1973, and he’s nominated posthumously this year in the Best American Roots Recording category for his song “I Remember Everything.”

Other Grammy nominees slated to participate in the Spotify Singles series this week include Chika, D Smoke, Noah Cyrus and Ingrid Andress. You can listen to the two Bridgers songs below.
