More than half a century ago, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, McDonald’s franchisee Jim Delligatti had a feeling that something was missing from his menu. More specifically, a larger burger “geared towards adults” was missing. It was from this feeling that, on April 22, 1967, a star was born — a double-patty, triple-bun burger with a slice of cheese, lettuce, onions and a secret “special sauce.” He called it Big Mac.

By 1968, the Big Mac had launched nationally and it quickly ascended to fast food stardom. Story has it that it took a few more years to perfect the Big Mac Sauce recipe — at one point there were actually two different recipes being used — but eventually it was narrowed down to a single technique called Big Mac Sauce recipe “72,” the same one we all know and love today.

So what the fuck is it about that sauce that makes it so good? It’s a question that condiment enthusiasts and McDonald’s frequent flyers have sought to answer for years, to no avail. If you Google “Big Mac Sauce,” it yields hundreds of recipes claiming to be “just like the real thing.” From what I can tell, it definitely comprises sweet relish, mayo, vinegar, American yellow mustard, garlic powder, onion powder and paprika, though the discrepancy seems to lie in how much each recipe calls for. The fact is, there is only one real thing.

Which is why Big Mac Sauce aficionados will be pleased to know that — after “years of relentless customer demand,” per Forbes — McDonald’s has officially added Big Mac Sauce Dip Cups to the menu.

Starting on April 27, and only for a limited time and at participating restaurants across the U.S., Big Mac Sauce Dip Cups will be available with any purchase of Chicken McNuggets at no extra cost, or a la cart. The one caveat is that you do have to order on the McDonald’s App to get the goods.

For the uninitiated, this isn’t the first time the burger giant has made its secret sauce available to the general public. Back in 2017, 10,000 bottles of the sauce were given away at select restaurants worldwide. Unsurprisingly, a number of those bottles wound up on eBay, listed at anywhere from $100 to…$100,000. So fingers crossed that this time around goes a little smoother, because if I catch any of you selling McDonald’s dip cups on eBay for $10,000 I STG.
