How best to describe the comedy of Joe Pera? A recent interview with Pera at Deadline cited “his slow-moving, subdued delivery and his accompanying series of sweaters” and offered up a Fred Rogers comparison — not necessarily what you’d expect in terms of cult comedian in 2020. But that helps explain Pera’s appeal. A sketch in which Pera discovers the music of The Who for the first time focuses on the unabashed joy the music brings him; it’s infectious.

And now, Vulture reports that Pera has written a book, slated for publication next year. What’s it called? Well, the title is part of its genius. In May 2021, you’ll be able to read A Bathroom Book for People Not Pooping or Peeing But Using the Bathroom as an Escape. Pera revealed the book’s cover on Twitter.

The book’s description offers allusions to the lives of Pera and his collaborator Joseph Bennett. “Joe Pera goes to the bathroom a lot. And his friend, Joe Bennett, does too,” the description reads. “They both have small bladders but more often, it’s just to get a moment of quiet, a break from work, or because it’s the only way they know how to politely end conversations.”

Pera’s magnificently titled book will be out in stores on May 4, 2021. Let’s hope it helps make the world a less anxious place.
