Earlier this year, Victoria’s Secret announced the brand’s iconic fashion show wouldn’t be televised for the first time in nearly two decades. Now it seems like the longtime event won’t happen at all.

Model and VS Angel Shanina Shaik broke the news to Australian publication The Daily Telegraph on Tuesday, People reported.

“Unfortunately, the Victoria’s Secret Show won’t be happening this year,” Shaik reportedly told the Australian outlet.

While Victoria’s Secret has yet to confirm Shaik’s claim, the 28-year-old model, who first appeared in the show back in 2011 and returned to the runway in 2012, 2014, 2015 and 2018, suggested Victoria’s Secret may have cancelled the annual event because “they’re trying to work on branding and new ways to do the show.”

It’s been a rough few years for the brand, whose annual fashion show had a long legacy as a highly-anticipated event that boasted high-profile models and performers including Ariana Grande, Rihanna and Kanye West. Ratings for the televised fashion show have dipped in recent years, as the brand has struggled with a decline in sales as well as backlash for a lack of diversity and inclusion, both in stores and on the runway.

In May, Les Wexner, CEO of Victoria’s Secret parent company L Brands, announced the 2019 fashion show would not be televised, after 2018’s broadcast marked the show’s worst ratings in its nearly 20-year history.

“Fashion is a business of change. We must evolve and change to grow. With that in mind, we have decided to re-think the traditional Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show,” Wexler wrote in a memo that went out to employees in May. “In 2019 and beyond, we’re focusing on developing exciting and dynamic content and a kind of event — delivered to our customers on platforms that she’s glued to…and in ways that will push the boundaries in the global digital age.”
