Turns Out Marvel Does Not Actually Have Plans for a Trans Character

It appears to have been a misunderstanding

Following recent reports that Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige had confirmed the Marvel Universe would be introducing its first trans character in the near future, sources reportedly close to the studio have clarified that is not the case, Variety reported.

The reports spread after Feige responded to a question about LGBT+ representation during an appearance at a guest lecture series for the New York Film Academy in Los Angeles last month. When asked if the studio planned “on bringing more LGBT+ characters into the MCU, specifically the T, trans characters,” Feigi responded, “Yes — absolutely, yes,” adding that such a character would be introduced “very soon. In a movie that we’re shooting right now.”

While reporters took Feigi’s answer as a response to the second half of the question focusing specifically on trans characters, Variety‘s sources have clarified that Feigi was speaking about LGBT+ representation more broadly, and had not meant to imply that the studio had immediate plans to introduce a trans character.

At the time of Feigi’s comment, the only MCU movie in production was Eternals, which Feige confirmed back in August would feature the MCU’s first major gay character, though specific details have yet to be disclosed.

“He’s married, he’s got a family, and that is just part of who he is,” Feige told Good Morning America while at the D23 Expo in Anaheim last summer.

While the inclusion of a major gay character is still a big step forward for Marvel’s LGBT+ representation, the MCU may have to wait longer than expected for the “T” to receive the attention viewers had been anticipating.
