Congratulations are in order to one Kim Kardashian, who is now officially a single woman after filing for divorce over a year ago. While this does not mean that her lengthy and drama-filled divorce from the rapper formerly known as Kanye West has been finalized, it does mean that the request she filed back in December to become legally single while still wrapped up in the tumultuous divorce process has been approved.

The approval, first reported by TMZ, allows Kardashian to shed her marital status without having to wait for other aspects of her divorce to be resolved, which can take a long time when there’s a lot of money, fame and children involved. The Los Angeles judge who granted Kardashian’s request for legal singlehood also approved dropping the “West” from her name, which the star adopted after her marriage to Ye in 2014. While one of 2021’s fellow high-profile divorcées, Melinda Gates, chose to hang onto her married name after divorcing her billionaire ex last year, Kim Kardashian opted to restore her name to the original, alliterative form she made famous.

According to Kardashian, this move is best for everyone involved, and might help her ex move on. “I very much desire to be divorced,” Kardashian said in court documents filed late last month. “I believe that the court terminating our marital status will help Kanye to accept that our marital relationship is over and to move forward on a better path which will assist us in peacefully co-parenting our children.”

Meanwhile, Kanye West/Ye is doing everything in his power to stop his ex from moving on. While Kim has spent the past few months enjoying the (now official) single life with new beau Pete Davidson and taking steps to legally restore her singlehood, Kanye West is literally begging his ex to return, issuing public pleas for her heart at his concerts and delivering truckloads of roses to her home. In short, Kanye West is doing what Kanye West does best: making a public spectacle of himself. This time, however, he’s doing it at the expense of a woman who has made it very clear that she is no longer interested in being his wife by literally filing for divorce and declaring herself legally single.

Like much of Ye’s behavior in recent years, his refusal to leave his ex alone is, frankly, not a vibe. Moreover, it’s yet another example of aggressive and concerning behavior from a man in power who won’t take no for an answer. No wonder Kardashian, whose ex refuses to recognize her filing for literal divorce as the end of their relationship, wants to confirm her single status in the eyes of the law — and, hopefully, in the eyes of her ex. Maybe Ye will finally get the hint this time.
