These are tough times we’re living in, but we finally have some good news to cling to: Detective Elliot Stabler is returning to TV. As Deadline reports, the beloved Law & Order: SVU character played by Christopher Meloni will return to NBC in a new Law & Order spinoff series.

The Dick Wolf crime drama received a 13-episode order from the network and will be centered around the NYPD organized crime unit led by Stabler. Meloni exited SVU in 2011 after 12 seasons, when his character Stabler made the decision to retire from the force.

Obviously, the news of his return was met with delight from fans of SVU (and perhaps more specifically, fans of Meloni’s chemistry with Mariska Hargitay’s Olivia Benson, his partner and best friend). As Vulture declared, “Your Daddy Elliot Stabler Is Coming Back to TV.” (Kudos to them for dubbing Stabler a “daddy extraordinaire” and making note of “his immeasurable ‘protect and serve, if you know what I mean’ energy.”)

There’s no word yet on any potential crossover episodes with SVU that could see Benson and Stabler reunited, but with both shows set in New York and the franchise’s history of crossovers, it seems more than likely. At least we can dream, right?
