“Green Book” Wins Best Picture on Oscar Night Marked By Shocking Plot Twists

On Hollywood’s biggest night of the year, two of its most controversial pictures won big.

The 91st annual Academy Awards bestowed four total honors to Bohemian Rhapsody, including a Best Actor nod to Rami Malek, despite the allegations of sexual abuse on the film’s director, Bryan Singer.

And Green Book, the ceremony’s Best Picture winner, took home three total awards with two going to its producer and co-screenwriter, Nick Vallelonga, whose past controversial tweets supporting President Trump knocked him down a few pegs with the overwhelmingly liberal Hollywood crowd. The movie also endured another scandal when the family of late pianist Don Shirley, played by Mahershala Al in the film, went public with their anger over not being consulted on the biopic.

Black Panther, the first superhero movie to ever be nominated for best picture, may not have landed the top prize,  but the Marvel flick did make history with the first ever wins for black women in the production design (Hannah Beachler) and costume design (Ruth Carter).
