On Dec. 27, the film world lost one of its most memorable movie stars, Carrie Fisher, who was best known for her portrayal of Princess Leia Organa in the Star Wars series. She was 60.
The daughter of entertainers Debbie Reynolds and Eddie Fisher, the actress got her big break in 1977, when she was cast in Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope, opposite a young Harrison Ford and Mark Hamill in what would become a career-defining pop culture sensation. In the ensuing years, she would film a pair of Star Wars sequels, The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Return of the Jedi (1983); and find her name in the credits of cult classics such as The ‘Burbs (1989), When Harry Met Sally … (1989), and Soap Dish (1991). Fisher even dropped in for a few uncredited roles in 1991’s memorable Hook (starring the late Robin Williams) and 1997’s Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery.
Throughout the aughts, Fisher stayed relevant, popping up in Scream 3 (2000), TV series such as Sex in the City and Weeds, and even did a 20-episode run on Family Guy, voicing the character “Angela.” Not to mention her most recent cameo as Princess Leia in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, a role she will reprise one final time, posthumously, in Star Wars: Episode VIII, which is due out some time next year.
Several celebrities have taken to social media to pay tribute to the late actress:
