The only known 550A to compete in a Grand Prix could be yours

Considering only 40 of ‘em were ever made, each and every Porsche 550A Spyder is special. But the ‘58 model auction house Bonhams is offering at its upcoming Scottsdale auction is the pick of the litter.

Just consider these accomplishments from chassis No. 550A-0145: second in class and fifth overall at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, class winner at Nürburgring, class winner at the 12 Hours of Reims, class winner at the Zandvoort NAV Race and class winner at the Dutch Grand Prix.

The second generation of the 550 (the car made famous by James Dean), the 550A was known as the “giant killer” because of its ability to compete against much bigger vehicles, often coming away victorious, despite only having a flat-four, air-cooled engine under the hood.

Believed to be the only 550A to have ever even competed in a Grand Prix, this special Spyder is said to be “one of the best original examples extant” and “among the most important cars of its kind in the world,” according to Bonhams.

Taking place January 18th at Westin Kierland Resort, the auction could fetch over seven figures.
