Mercedes has one.

Aston Martin has one.

And now it seems Toyota, of all marques, will soon have an FI-inspired road car of its very own.

Designed using the expertise Toyota has accumulated while participating in FIA World Endurance Championship, the hybrid GR Super Sport concept was recently introduced to the world at the 2018 Tokyo Auto Salon.

A project of Toyota’s in-house Gazoo Racing division, the GR Super Sport supercar concept features a twin-turbo direct injection V6 mated to a hybrid powertrain producing 986 HP. Riding on 18-inch wheels wrapped in racing tires, the GR Super Sport has a large splitter sitting in front and an equally massive diffuser perched on its back.

“Rather than developing production cars into sports cars, we aim to work out how to incorporate the know-how developed through races and rallies into production cars amid various restrictions,” said Gazoo Racing president Shigeki Tomoyama. “Thus, this is the starting point for Toyota’s completely new challenge to develop sports cars from active race cars.”

While Tomoyama says it’ll be “some time” before customers have the opportunity to get behind the wheel of the concept, Toyota does sound serious about the car hitting the road in the future.
