Surfing on a Raging River in Munich in the Freezing Cold

When The Beach Boys listed off all their top international surfing destination picks in “Surfin’ U.S.A.“—Del Mar, Santa Cruz, Narrabeen, et al.—Munich, Germany, didn’t make the cut. In fact, Germany is probably the last place on earth one would expect there to be shreddable waves.

But California filmmaker Matt Payne, as part of Red Bull’s “Made in Europe” series, tracked down Munich local Quirin Rohleder, who owns a media and management company, to prove the surfing world wrong. And boy does he ever get the job done.

Below, watch as Rohleder deftly surfs the raging man-made River Eisbach (a.k.a. the “ice brook”), with snow and ice visibly lining the riverbanks.
