Though slightly terrifying to watch, footage of storms and tornadoes can be highly educational for scientists.

Using high-resolution video, National Geographic explorer Anton Seimon is trying to understand more about tornadoes; specifically how they act and move on the ground. Seimon and his team captured this footage of tornadoes in the Midwest in June 2017.

“We’re trying to see what tornadoes are doing at the surface, because that’s where the biggest impacts on humanity are—but it’s also the hardest place to measure,” Seimon said in the National Geographic story.

The team is also hoping to crowdsource footage of the same storms to create a 3-D map that will give them further insight into how these deadly storms behave.
