People Become Boring Pretty Early in Life, Unfortunately

When's the last time you picked up a new hobby?

As Abe Simpson told his son Homer, “I used to be with it, but then they changed what ‘it’ was. Now what I’m with isn’t ‘it’, and what’s ‘it’ seems weird and scary to me. It’ll happen to you!”

Point being, in addition to making you wiser, getting older also usually renders you more boring. And, at least according to a study conducted by Airbnb, it happens a lot sooner than you’d think.

The study, which surveyed 2,000 respondents about their lives, found that while men are at their most exciting at 27, by the time they hit 39 only 12 years later, they’re boring as laundry day. (If it makes you feel any better, women hit their “peak” level of boring four years earlier at 35).

According to Airbnb, these are the things a 39-year-old man is less likely to do: staying out until the early hours on a weekday, trying a new hobby, going out of the way to make a new friend, booking a spontaneous vacation, learning a new skill, visiting a friend unannounced, changing jobs, going on a spontaneous shopping trip, asking someone out and trying a new sport.

The red-white-and-blue lining, if there is one, is that the results of the study were specifically collected from Britons so they don’t necessarily apply to us red-blooded, fun-loving, Americans.

USA baby, USA.
