Here’s What Porn Looked Like on an ‘87 Mac

When internet usage became widespread in the mid-to-late ‘90s, it changed the way we share information, communicate with one another and conduct business.

It also changed the way we consume pornography.

Ever wonder what nudies looked like on a computer screen prior to that? Prepare to be disappointed.

Imgur user Wowbobwow recently bought a 1987 Mac SE off Craigslist. And on that SE, he found an otherwise empty folder labeled “America Online.” Curiosity getting the best of him, and Wowbobwow continued down the wormhole, opening an application called MacPlaymate.

MacPlaymate is a portal into a simpler, more analog era of extramarital material.

The app — labeled “Interactive Erotica for the Mac” — features an interactive playmate named Maxie who’s willing to do promiscuous things with herself, or her friends Lola and Melvin. (To see Maxie’s NSFW moves for yourself, check out the full gallery.)

The program’s designer, Mike Saenz, apparently wanted users to be safe at work while using his NSFW app, so he equipped MacPlaymate with a “PANIC” button that led to a “lovely fake-spreadsheet ‘boss screen,’” notes Wowbobwow’s post.

Should you be interested in more of what Maxie, Lola or Melvin have to offer, the vintage software is still available to download.
