123456 is Worst Password of 2017 As Ranked by SplashData

People, as Jerry Seinfeld once opined, are the worst.

We’re also right up there with mules in terms of stubbornness which is why, despite plenty of resources advising them to, many of us refuse to change our passwords annually, if at all.

We know this because SplashData just released its annual “Worst Passwords” list and, for the second straight year, “123456” and “password” came in first and second, respectively.

Gleaned from an analysis of millions of stolen logins that were made public this year, the top 25 terms on the worst passwords list only contains 11 new terms. People, it should contain 25.

One of the new ones isn’t that hard to guess. For 2017, “starwars” joined the list at #16, probably because of some movie that came out last week.

“Unfortunately, while the newest episode may be a fantastic addition to the Star Wars franchise, ‘starwars’ is a dangerous password to use,” SplashData CEO Morgan Slain CEO said in a press release. “Hackers are using common terms from pop culture and sports to break into accounts online because they know many people are using those easy-to-remember words.”
