If you want something done right … do it yourself.

In this case, that’s Matt Hranek, Upstate native, photographer, director, editor, travel host and author of bestseller A Man and His Watch. In Hranek’s mind, it’s tough to find a decent gentleman’s glossy these days. So he recently launched his own: Wm Brown Magazine.

On shelves now, the first issue is an ode to tweed, steak, cars and cocktails.

“I had been looking to find a men’s magazine that speaks to the whole version of myself and I had not found that, so I decided to create it,” said Hranek. “The mag spends a fair amount of time concentrating on the above. So I’m basically looking to make connections with like-minded gents. I know I am not alone.”

Hot on the tail of the launch, we tapped Hranek to get his take on the seven essentials every gent needs — and the seven that simply must go.

The 7 Essentials …

  1. A partner in crime
  2. Humility
  3. A sense of humor
  4. Good shoes
  5. A watch you love
  6. A go-to recipe
  7. A sharp knife

And the 7 You Should Dispose of Immediately …

  1. An uncooperative partner
  2. Square-toed shoes
  3. A dull knife
  4. That cheap ill fitting suit
  5. A bad barber
  6. A bad attitude
  7. Not doing what you love
