“If you don’t like it, write your congressman.”
That line has ended countless political arguments in recent years, but has rarely led to anyone actually sitting down to pen a letter because, among other things, no one writes letters anymore. What they do write, for better or worse, are Facebook posts, which is why Mark Zuckerberg just unveiled a new “Town Hall” feature that makes it really easy for users to find and contact their elected representatives via the social media platform.
Accessible to desktop and mobile users across the United States under the “More” tab, the tool asks user to enter their address and then pulls up a list of elected reps in their district. Once the list is created, Facebook presents the option to follow the rep or contact them with a call, email or message sent through Facebook Messenger.
To further its goal of “building a civically-engaged community” and help users “engage in a thoughtful and informed way,” Facebook is also going to send reminders about local elections. “The more you engage with the political process, the more you can ensure it reflects your values,” according to Zuckerberg. “The starting point is knowing who represents you and how you can make your voice heard on the decisions that affect your life.”
It doesn’t make up for the fake news situation Zuck has on his hands, but at least it’s a start.
