The Gift of Jab

There are many ways to raise money for a good cause. Bake sales. Charity galas. Texting “HAITI.”

Or you could just go ahead and punch a stranger in the face.

And help cure cancer by doing it. Because punch-lovin’ do-gooders Haymakers For Hope are bringing their charity boxing program back to NYC, and they’re taking sign-ups starting today.

Think of HFH as the hardass cousin to the fundraising marathons of the world. No running, though. Just a real, live, sanctioned slugfest.

The skinny: register online and HFH pairs you with an opponent based on height, weight and skill level. You’ve then got four months to train with sinewy pugilists at NYC boxing gyms, including Church Street, Trinity and Mendez.

Come November, you’ll step into the ring for an official USA Boxing bout complete with ring girls, announcers and 1,500 screaming spectators (check the tape from last year’s event).

About those spectators: as you train, you raise cash for the cancer charity of your choice – every ticket that friends or family buy to watch you duke it out counts as a donation. Or simply cut a check and focus on your uppercut.

And then do some good with it.

Nota bene: as it happens, one of InsideHook’s editors will be lacing up the gloves for the New York event. So if you’ve got a bone to pick, here’s your chance.
