Madison Bumgarner Leaving Giants for Diamondbacks on $85M Deal

According to reports, the Arizona Diamondbacks and free-agent pitcher Madison Bumgarner have agreed to a five-year deal worth $85 million.

A four-time All-Star and three-time World Series champion with the Giants, Bumgarner pitched 11 seasons for San Francisco but seemed destined to leave town following last season.

The 30-year-old went 9-9 with a career-high 3.90 ERA last season and will join an Arizona team that went 85-77 last season but were not really in contention.

If Arizona is able to make the playoffs this season, Bumgarner could prove to be especially valuable as he has an 8-3 postseason record with a 2.11 ERA spread across 14 starts and two relief appearances.

Bumgarner, who should slot in as Arizona’s Opening Day starter, joins a rotation that already includes Zac Gallen, Robbie Ray, Merrill Kelly, Luke Weaver and possibly Mike Leake.

Arizona added right-hander Zack Greinke on a $206.5 million, six-year deal in 2015 but traded him away in July to the Houston Astros.

Elsewhere in MLB on Sunday, another big-name pitcher will be tossing strikes in a different city next season as the Texas Rangers acquired two-time Cy Young winner Corey Kluber from the Cleveland Indians for center fielder Delino DeShields and 21-year-old right-handed reliever Emmanuel Clase.

Kluber missed the majority of last season with a broken forearm after getting hitting by a line drive on May 1.
