I’ll get this out of the way: Coffee machines like Nespresso (and Keurig and every other capsule-based coffee maker) are not a great deal for the environment.

While recognizing this, plus the idea that it’s not that hard to buy good coffee beans, grind ‘em and make a solid cup o’ joe — especially if you use a pour-over method or a French press — I’m still a champion of the brand. The taste is several leaps beyond K-cups, the individual pods are pretty inexpensive, and my current machine has lasted over eight years without a problem.

Plus, when I have company over, it’s so much easier to whip something consistent and crowd-pleasing (note: my parties are boring). The coffee from a Nespresso is just a tad below what my local barista is brewing in quality, but at 1/3 the price.

(Some guilt assuaged: Nespresso has a recycling program.)

If I was buying a new machine, I’d definitely target the Nespresso by De’Longhi ENV150R VertuoPlus, a quite striking and slim red java maker that can whip both single-serve coffees and espressos at the push of a button. Plus, the water tank can swivel out or stay behind the device, depending on your counter space.

The machine also adjusts time and temp for each coffee profile thanks to an embedded barcode on the rim of each capsule.

Right now, the ENV150R is $99, a 45% savings. Free shipping for Prime members, too.

Certainly not feeling guilty about that price.
