Amazon Starts Filling It's 'Spheres' with Exotic Plants

Amazon is bringing a dose of fauna to the concrete jungle in high-tech fashion.

As part of its new $4 billion campus planned for a sprawling 10 blocks in downtown Seattle, the e-commerce giant is building massive biospheres.

Announced in 2016, Amazon’s “Spheres” finally are starting to take shape. The company made the first addition, an 11-foot Australian tree fern, to the biospheres Friday.

When completed in 2018, the greenhouse geodesic structures will be filled with hundreds of exotic plants. The company has big plans to go even further: Over 3,000 are being grown and tested for the “Spheres” by Amazon horticulturists at greenhouses outside of Seattle. Maybe a nod to the company’s namesake?

This is the Guzmania conifera, a cloud forest bromeliad. From the same family as the pineapple, this stunning plant is an evergreen epiphytic perennial from Ecuador.

Introducing the odoriferous Bulbophyllum phalaenopsis! The largest of the Bulbophyllum orchids, this species is native to Irian Jaya. This plant is not just interesting to look at, it also has a novel way to attract fly pollinators; its odor is similar to that of rotting flesh.

This is the 6th Ave conservatory. With an interior apex of 50 ft, visitors will be able to sit in the shade of palm trees and giant tree ferns.

Designed by NBBJ, the “Spheres” is designed to serve as a therapeutic refuge for Amazon employees with enough room for 800 staff members, Inhabitat reports.

Comprised of three greenhouses, the largest of them will be 130 feet tall and 90 feet in diameter.
