At-altitude emailing is about to get a little easier

Delta Now Offering Free WiFi on 55 Flights a Day

Effective today, Delta Airlines is offering free wifi on 55 of its daily flights. Meaning: select lucky passengers will now be able to text, email and social-media stalk from 30,000 feet without having to pay the airline’s usual $15+ charge.

Before you get too excited, a bit of context: Delta operates more than 4,000 flights a day. The airline’s plan is to randomly make this service available to passengers, in order to determine if they’ll even use it. It’s highly unlikely most fliers will get to experience it, and even if they do, they might be disappointed. As we noted in our guide to airline and airport wifi, in-flight connectivity is still terrible because most airlines fly old planes outfitted with outdated infrastructure. The main culprit is Gogo, an entertainment service touting Gen-1 technology.

If you want to increase your odds at having free wifi on a plane, we recommend booking a flight with JetBlue, currently the only airline with high-speed connection for every set. Or, you could just take a break from answering emails and watch a romcom. Your call.
