The crew-neck sweatshirt is my all-time favorite garment. In a four-season world, it cannot be beat in versatility. My go-to for a couple years was an elbow-patch adorned stunner from Askov Finlayson, but it’s no longer available.
Enter: The ReNew Fleece Sweatshirt, Everlane’s latest take on the style made out of plastic bottles, and the one I’ll be recommending from now on. But because the body is made from 100% recycled material — a much more involved process than cotton, obviously — once these are sold out, Everlane says they won’t be back in stock until October. So even if this is the kind of thing you wouldn’t buy until the end of summer, you’d do well to pick one up while they last.
I’ve written about ReNew, but I had never worn a piece from the Everlane collection, or any apparel made from plastic bottles, before this. It sounds like a good idea for the planet, but how comfy can it actually be compared to brushed virgin sumptuous fluffy cotton? After wearing mine for the last couple weeks, I can wholeheartedly say: equally, if not more, comfortable.
It’s currently available in Surplus green, Brick Red or Dark Navy colorways for $60 a pop, but as I mentioned above, all three are beginning to sell out (with navy going fastest). If you want to get in on the ground floor of truly recycled fashion, pick one up posthaste.
