Washington was facing an uncertain situation at quarterback as they headed into the offseason. Kirk Cousins was set to be a free agent, and after getting the franchise tag for two straight years, tagging him a third time would’ve cost an extraordinary amount of money. Washington had little to no shot at negotiating a long-term deal. They were stuck. So on Tuesday night, Washington decided to get ahead of the issue. They traded Cousins for Alex Smith, which leaves Cousins free to hit the open market. Washington also committed to Smith for the near future by signing him to a four-year extension. So where will Cousins go next? He is the most coveted quarterback on the open market. He is coming off a string of quality seasons and is only 29-years-old. It is rare that a quarterback of this caliber is hitting the free market. The Denver Broncos, Minnesota Vikings, Jacksonville Jaguars and the Buffalo Bills are all potential teams that could afford and utilize Cousins. Other options could be the Arizona Cardinals, New York Jets or the Cleveland Browns.
