In somewhat of a surprise given what he said last month about his future on the PGA Tour in regards to his car crash injury, Tiger Woods will return to the golf course next week and play with his 12-year-old son Charlie in the PNC Championship. It
“Although it’s been a long and challenging year, I am very excited to close it out by competing in the @PNCchampionship with my son Charlie,” Woods tweeted. “I’m playing as a Dad and couldn’t be more excited and proud.”
Woods hasn’t played in a tournament since the PNC Championship last year when he and Charlie finished seventh. A 36-hole event that allows participants to ride in a cart, the PNC Championship was holding a spot for Woods and will be happy to welcome him for two days of play at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club Orlando.
“We have been liaising with Tiger and his team for some time and are delighted that he has now decided to make his return to competitive golf at the PNC Championship,” Alastair Johnston of IMG, the executive chairman of the event, told the Associated Press.
Whatever happens on the course in Orlando, don’t expect to see Woods playing on TV on a regular basis.
“I think something that is realistic is playing the tour one day — never full time, ever again — but pick and choose, just like Mr. [Ben] Hogan did. Pick and choose a few events a year and you play around that,” Woods told Golf Digest. “You practice around that, and you gear yourself up for that. I think that’s how I’m going to have to play it from now on. It’s an unfortunate reality, but it’s my reality. And I understand it, and I accept it.”
The Masters, which the 15-time major winner has won five times, is only four months away.
