Can owning Tiger Woods’s putter help you golf more like Tiger Woods? Probably not — but whether you’re buying for a functional purpose or for bragging rights, you’re likely getting a piece of sports history. A GolfWRX article from earlier this year dubbed Woods’s Elder Wand “the most famous single club in golf history.” And, as a recent article by James Colgan in Golf pointed out, Woods’s famed putter isn’t the only Scott Cameron he has on hand. He has backups, and sometimes those backups are sold.

The Golf article focused on the recent sale of one such putter. This one hearkens back to the 2002 season, and is one of “around a half-dozen” in existence. And it just sold at auction for a (possibly) record-setting sum: $393,300.

According to the Golf article, that is “believed to be the most ever spent on a golf club.”

Golden Age Golf Auctions has more details on the putter, including the fact that it spent the last two decades “in the Far East, the Middle East, and Europe.” Accompanying the putter was a letter from Scotty Cameron certifying that this particular club was indeed made for Tiger Woods. It’s an imposing piece of hardware — and it’s led many to ponder just where the market for Woods’s clubs is heading.
