Richard Sherman Says Jerry Jones Has a “Plantation Mentality”

Jones has said Dallas players will stand with their “toe on the line” during the anthem or they won’t be Cowboys.

The potentially meaningless preseason game between the San Francisco 49ers and Dallas Cowboys on August 9 just got a lot more interesting.

That’s because Niners corner Richard Sherman, never one to shy away from a hot topic, ripped Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for his stance on the ongoing NFL national anthem controversy.

Sherman told USA Today in an interview that Jones — who insisted Dallas players will stand with their “toe on the line” during the anthem or they won’t be Cowboys — has the mentality of a slave owner .

“The owner of the Dallas Cowboys, with the old plantation mentality,” Sherman said. “What did you expect?”

Sherman also expressed skepticism regarding whether the ongoing talks about the anthem policy between the NFL and NFLPA would result in a resolution acceptable to both sides.

“They’re having the conversations; that’s awesome,” Sherman said. “But there are unintended consequences. If they did this (original policy) to appease people, they didn’t appease anyone. It’s like putting a Band-Aid over a broken leg.”

Jones is taking shots from all sides as Dallas sportscaster Dale Hansen took him to task on Monday in a YouTube video for holding his players to a standard that he himself does not meet during the playing of the anthem.
