It’s a Texas-sized signing for UNC: Larry Fedora is out as head coach and, according to reports, Mack Brown is in.

Following five years away from coaching, the longtime Longhorn coach will return to North Carolina to coach the Tar Heels.

Brown, who went 158-48 over 16 years at Texas, coach at UNC for 10 seasons before getting the Texas job and had a record of 69-46-1 with the Heels.

The 67-year-old, who won the national championship in 2005 with Vince Young as his quarterback, is currently working as an analyst at ESPN.

Brown will have his work cut out for him as North Carolina has won just five games over the last two seasons under the leadership of Fedora.

In an interview with Austin TV station KVUE ABC in April, Brown discussed a potential return to coaching.

“I talked to Dick Vermeil when I first quit and he waited 17 years before he went back,” Brown said. “I’ve interviewed a couple of places. Sally and I have talked about it. I won’t go back unless it’s somewhere that they really need us, it’s somewhere we want to live.”

Considering he has been spotted frequently in Chapel Hill over the course of this season, it’s safe to say the UNC job fulfills that requirement.
