If the Boston Red Sox fail to reach the World Series this year, it won’t be for lack of trying – or at least lack of spending.
Entering the 2018 season, the Red Sox have an Opening Day payroll of about $223 million, tops in the major leagues.
The Los Angeles Dodgers, who led the majors for the fourth consecutive season last year, will enter 2018 tied for the fourth-highest payroll with the Washington Nationals at approximately $180 million, according to projections by the Associated Press.
Following the Red Sox on the list are the San Francisco Giants at around $203 million (second) and the Chicago Cubs at close to $183 million (third).
Rounding out the top seven are the Los Angeles Angels at about $170 million (sixth) and the Yankees at around $167 million, their lowest payroll since 2003. According to the AP, this is the first time since 1992 the Yankees have had the seventh-highest payroll or lower.
On the other side of the coin, this is the first time Boston has been MLB’s biggest-spender since at least 1990.
