With a potential strike or lockout looming following the 2020 season, the NFL Players Association is attempting to get its members ready for potentially going months without income.

This week, the NFLPA issued a “work stoppage guide” to its players that contains tips on how to prepare for a strike or lockout and ESPN obtained a copy of the document.

Some of the more noteworthy suggestions include:

  • Try cooking at home instead of eating out as much.
  • Find renters for your unoccupied homes or bedrooms.
  • Consider selling a car you have not driven in the past six months.
  • Learn to say “no” — or at least, “not now” — to friends and family asking for money.
  • Consider selling clothes you have not worn in a year on Poshmark, Thredup or Tradesy.

The current collective bargaining agreement doesn’t expire until March 2021, but both sides were hoping to reach an agreement on a new CBA before the 2019 regular season begins next month.

Both sides also continue to say that they do not want a work stoppage, but the main sticking point during negotiations continues to be how revenue is divided between owners and players.

The CBA includes a provision that the players’ share of all league revenue can’t fall below 47 percent in a given year, but the players are negotiating for that figure to go up. To maximize their profits, owners don’t want it to move and have been unwilling to budge on that to this point.
