According to LeBron James, Donald Trump is using sports to do the same thing the president wants to do with the border wall between the U.S. and Mexico: divide people.
During an interview with CNN’s Don Lemon on Monday, James discussed President Trump, race issues, and what has been going on recently in the United States as a whole.
James told Lemon he thinks the “whole race thing is taking over” in America because the president “is trying to divide us.”
“He’s dividing us, and what I’ve noticed over the last few months is that he’s kind of used sport to kind of divide us,” James said. “That’s something that I can’t relate to, because I know that sport was the first time I ever was around someone white. I got an opportunity to see them and learn about them, and they got an opportunity to learn about me, and we became very good friends. I was like this is all because of sports. And sports has never been something that divided people. It’s always been something that brings someone together.”
The newly minted Laker also gave an interesting response when he was asked if being black in America was more difficult during Trump’s presidency. “No, I think it’s always been there, but I think the president in charge now has given people – they don’t care now,” he responded. “They throw it in your face now.”
