The last time an American boxing legend traveled to Moscow to fight a famous Russian fighter, they called it Rocky IV.
It also sounds like a movie plot, but the proposed fight between boxer Floyd Mayweather and Russian UFC fighter Khabib Nurmagomedov seems like it may actually happen.
With the potential to be one of the most-viewed sporting events ever, Nurmagomedov has said he may follow in fellow mixed martial arts star Conor McGregor’s footsteps and face Mayweather in the boxing ring.
Nurmagomedov said he had met with the secretary general of the Russian Boxing Federation in an effort to make the fight happen. “They are sure that we will gather 100,000 spectators,” he said.
“We want the fight to take place in Moscow at the legendary Luzhniki Arena,” he wrote in a post on Instagram. “[It will] set a world record for the sale of paid broadcasts.”
Mayweather, 50-0, beat McGregor in August 2017 in a boxing match that raked in more than $58.5 million and earned McGregor almost half of that haul.
Nurmagomedov beat McGregor in the Octagon earlier this month when the Irishman returned to UFC for the first time since fighting Mayweather.
Following the fight, 27-0 Nurmagomedov called out Mayweather publicly and the speculation that they may get in the ring as only grown from there.
