Besides the team being terrible, fans of the Miami Marlins had 2.4 billion reasons to boo David Samson when he showed up at the birthday party of Miami sports columnist Dan Le Batard.
That’s the amount of debt the ex-Marlins president’s team put the city of Miami in so they could erect Marlins Park.
Instead of 2.4 billion, it was another figure that came up at the party after Samson arrived and was lustily booed: $1.2 billion.
That figure is what team owner Jeffrey Loria was able to sell the team for in 2017 when an ownership group featuring ex-Yankee Derek Jeter came calling.
In his remarks to his detractors at Le Batard’s party, Samson mentioned it.
“Here’s why I love when you guys boo me,” he said. “I want you to keep booing me, because guess what? $1.2 billion. F–k you!”

While Le Batard and Samson have subsequently claimed the whole thing was a skit, the Miami New Times has a different report.
Actually, not at all how it happened. All on tape and all in good fun. And all for Lebatard’s birthday. No bragging, no fleecing…Ex-MIA Prez Taunts Taxpayers: Former Marlins president David Samson brags about fleecing fans — ‘$1.2 billion. F–k you!’ 🎥https://t.co/IWoMhr6c6P

“A source with knowledge of the event said that Samson’s comments were not scripted – he was encouraged to act like ‘a wrestling heel’ but chose to brag about all the money he made off the backs of regular Miami taxpayers,” according to the publication. “If it was a joke, it was among the most tone-deaf jokes ever told in Miami sports.”
