Mercurial Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant has gotten in trouble with the team for missing appointments in the past, but on Friday he has a meeting he can’t afford to miss. Literally.
Bryant and his $12.5 million salary are reportedly on the line Friday when he meets with Dallas owner Jerry Jones to discuss all of the team’s options with regard to the eight-year veteran.
And there are options aplenty for the team to select from, ranging from trading Bryant to restructuring his contract to asking him to take a paycut to outright releasing him.
Their fifth option, doing nothing and letting the franchise’s all-time leader in touchdown receptions (73) simply play out the year under his current deal is possible, but it seems unlikely due to the salary cap situation in Dallas.
During Bryant’s career with the Cowboys, Dallas has made the playoffs twice and only won a single playoff game.
“If Friday’s meeting is the end or the beginning of the end of Bryant’s time with the Cowboys, it will close the books on the Dallas career of one of the franchise’s most talented, frustrating and controversial players,” according to The Dallas Observer.
