Tomorrow at Citi Field in Queens, David Wright will start at third base for the New York Mets for the final time.
It has been a rough few years for the seven-time All-Star and two-time Gold Glover as injuries have prevented him from playing baseball at anything approaching a major-league level.
However, to give their longtime captain a proper sendoff, the Mets will welcome Wright to the hot corner for a final time to let the home fans give him his due.
In an interview with The New York Post, Wright said it was “very, very classy of the organization” to have him back for one more game.
“I’m excited, but it’s sad for me because I never physically was able to make it back,” Wright said. “It’s nice to be able to make it back, but it’s more of an honorary thing because my body just can’t take the game anymore. It’s weird to explain, because it’s almost like you’re accomplishing a goal, but not really. It’s an over-the-top nice gesture by the Mets to allow this to happen. But at the same time, all the work and everything you put in, physically it really is debilitating.”
In the interview, Wright also shared that his favorite career moment was hitting a home run in the Mets’ first home game in the 2015 World Series. “By far the most fun I’ve ever had on a baseball field,” he said.
