After his public support of Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh was criticized for being hypocritical, Arizona Cardinals president Michael Bidwill somewhat doubled down on what he was ripped for.

Bidwill’s support of using the public platform of his team’s website to praise Kavanaugh and express his political views was called hypocritical as the NFL has restricted the right of its players to use their platform to express their views with the new national anthem policy.

When he was asked about that conundrum during an interview on NewsTalk 550 KFYI, Bidwill said he does support players addressing social issues but believes they should “restrict their statements” on game days.

“I think it’s important to speak up,” he said. “People are saying stick to sports? You know what? We ask our players 20 days a year – game days – to restrict their statements. The rest of the days, we want our players to get engaged in the community. Just like I am and other owners are.”

Bidwill is one of five team executives on the Social Justice Committee, a group which includes five players that strives to get involved in communities and supports making policy changes.

Despite the criticism, Bidwill said he didn’t regret the way he offered his support of Kavanaugh.
