Reading accounts of athletic injuries can sometimes be a bit of a bore. But what happens when an athlete’s injury is caused by a literal boar? Turns out that’s a lot less theoretical than you might think.

Last May, Mets outfielder Yoenis Cespedes injured his ankle at an incident at his ranch in Port St. Lucie, Florida. Details at the time were scarce, but the aftermath of the injury prompted player and team to restructure his contract. And now, more information about the incident has surfaced — and it might just make Mets fans go hog wild.

The New York Post reports that Cespedes incurred the injury while facing down a wild boar on his ranch.

… Cespedes has traps on his ranch for a variety of reasons, including to keep boars away from people. But one boar was removed from a trap — perhaps by Cespedes — and either charged toward Cespedes or startled him, causing Cespedes to step into a hole.

This all took place while Cespedes was recovering from heel surgery, adding an ankle fracture into the mix and further delaying his recovery.

ESPN reports that Cespedes’s restructured contract reduces his 2020 salary from $29.5 million to $6 million — though if he starts the season off the injured list that $6 million would increase to a base salary of $11 million. Cespedes would also have the ability to earn more via incentives, according to ESPN.

Between this news and the meme-friendly concept of 30 to 50 feral hogs, it’s been a prominent time for uncontrolled swine — and a dangerous time for the rest of us, professional athletes or not.
