On the Fourth of July, a 28-year-old MLB rookie made some fireworks of his own in Milwaukee.
Six years after signing with the Brewers as an undrafted free agent, infielder Nate Orf notched his first major-league hit by launching a solo home run over the fence in left field in Milwaukee.
The bomb, which ultimately decided the game in Milwaukee’s 3-2 win over the Minnesota Twins, was the perfect way for Orf, who signed his deal for a measly $500 in 2012, to get his first hit in the big leagues.
To their credit, the fans at Miller Park understood the significance of the moment for the elderly (by MLB standards) rookie and insisted that he come out of the dugout for a curtain call.
Orf was initially reluctant to give the fans what they wanted, but his teammates Manny Pina and Jesus Aguilar made sure the Miller Park faithful got the response they were looking for, carrying Orf out onto the field on their shoulders. Watch:

Whether or not Orf—who hit .307 with 18 doubles, three triples, 39 RBI and 20 stolen bases in Triple-A this season—sticks in the Majors remains to be seen, but for one day at least the Brewers rookie was the toast of the town.
