Tents have come a long way since the days of John Muir’s canvas lean-to.
They pack down to the size of a Chipotle burrito and weigh less to boot. They keep you warm. They keep you cool. And in the case of the Sunda, they can be converted into a hammock.
Hammock tents are having a moment, this is for certain. But the Sunda, from outdoor tech company Kammok, rises above the field (literally and figuratively) for several reasons.
First, it uses a Lumos fabric that reflects the sun’s rays so you’re not baking like a potato come sun-up. Second, you can peel back the protective layer so you’re left with just mosquito netting — pairs well with views and a nice breeze. And third, at 8.5 x 4 feet with a high, cavernous pitch, it fits two quite comfortably.
There’s also some sweet tech inside: like a gear loop at the apex to hang a lantern and side pockets for your flashlight and phone.
It’s already funded on Kickstarter and scheduled to deliver in June. For about $300, you can claim one. They also have a $5,000 option that includes a guided four-day float trip down the Santa Elena Canyon in Big Bend National Park.
Not a bad place to break in your hammock. I mean tent. I mean hammock tent.
Let’s just call it a Sunda.
