There’s trouble in paradise.
The Fyre Festival, billed as a two-weekend, Coachella-style luxury music and arts event—on a private island in the Bahamas once owned by Pablo Escobar—has taken on a vibe that’s more like Lord of the Flies.
The festival, whose first full day of events was supposed to begin Friday (April 28), was promptly cancelled by organizers after fans showed up to utter chaos. A number of tweets from concertgoers set the scene: luggage was mishandled; “glampers” were provided with recycled disaster relief tents instead of luxury domes; and for one, the “gourmet food,” which concertgoers paid extra for, turned out to be two pieces of un-toasted bread and cheese.
Now, many of those visitors are stranded on the island—or in transit—and the U.S. embassy in the Bahamas has even gotten involved to sort out the chaos.
Per Variety, ticket-holders paid anywhere from $450–$12,000—with some VIP packages as much as $250,000—to attend the two-weekend festival (April 28-30; May 5-7), which pop-punkers Blink-182 were headlining. The band has since pulled out.
Also set to perform were top acts like Migos, Disclosure, and Major Lazer.
