Introducing the McConacabin.
Wild Turkey and Australian tiny home startup Unyoked just announced the opening of “The Reserve,” an off-grid, eco-cabin outside Sydney designed by Wild Turkey’s Creative Director … Mr. Matthew McConaughey. It’s a more natural fit than you might think. Booze and the outdoors are both important to the Texan; one of the best celeb features written about the man sees him kayaking around Lake Austin after taking what he calls “a couple sunshine sips.”
The goal of this project is to encourage Australians to reconnect with their natural environment in a sustainable way. The cabin is covered in solar panels, was built with thoughtful materials, and doesn’t include Wi-Fi. Instead, guests are encouraged to read some of McConaughey’s personally-selected books (including essays from Emerson, and The Greatest Salesman in the World by Og Mandino, which McConaughey credits with changing the trajectory of his life), or bump Sturgill Simpson and Bob Dylan on the cabin’s vintage cassette stereo.
There’s also, of course, a Wild Turkey bar inside. Plus polished wooden finishings, a nicer kitchen than you’d find in most apartments, and a bed with Western fixings. Bookings don’t go live until December, so we’d recommend bookmarking this page and checking in periodically. A percentage of each booking will be donated to the Foundation of National Parks and Wildlife, an organization that could extra cash more than ever right now. Over the weekend, bushfires resulted in the tragic death of over 1,000 koalas, destroying 80 percent of their habitat. It’s devastating, it’s difficult to wrap your head around, and we’re not naive enough to think a little liquor cabin can save species. But brands thinking this way, spreading the word of sustainability, is a step in the right direction, and one that would’ve been alien just 10 years ago. Hopefully others follow suit.
