The 2020s have been a challenging time for some iconic restaurants around the world, with more than a few decades-old hot spots finding themselves unable to cope with the loss of revenue sparked by the pandemic. Among those was Le Caprice, the London restaurant known for its rich history and storied clientele, which announced that it was closing in 2020, which coincided with the end of its lease.

In an article for the Evening Standard when news broke of the restaurant’s closing, Nicholas Coleridge described Le Caprice as “the staff canteen for a generation of West End flâneurs, for whom the chic, understated decor, swift service and club-like camaraderie made it the easy choice.”

Now, it seems that while Le Caprice is gone, the space that once housed the restaurant in question will host a new venture from Jeremy King, the restaurateur who headed the space beginning in 1981. According to a report from Sammy Gecsoyler at The Guardian, King is teaming with longtime Le Caprice maître d’ and general manager Jesus Adorno to open a new restaurant in the space.

If the reactions of the restaurant critics and industry professionals quoted in The Guardian are any indication, the successor to Le Caprice is likely to be warmly embraced by London diners. Given that its predecessor’s clientele included — as per an Eater article from 2020 — “the late Princess Diana, Rolling Stone Mick Jagger, the actress Elizabeth Taylor, and the model Kate Moss,” it’ll be intriguing to see who the new space’s regulars turn out to be.
